Aha! That's where the wood shop comes in. Lots of sawdust. Lots of wood chips broken down by the girls in the coop.

If you can add grass clippings (greens) to your sawdust (browns) you can speed up the composting and have a great pile of compost for next spring. Animal pooh will make everything work even better.

I use it with the rabbit bedding. I have been composting it, but takes forever. This fall we are planning on shredding leaves, spreading rabbit manure and what compost we have, but I have a lot of sawdust that is soaked in rabbit urine. I wonder if we should just spread that out this fall. I was worried it would be too much brown. Is it too much brown or does the urine make a difference?

I've never been able to get a good grasp of the 'green/brown' thing. I use A LOT of wood chips/sawdust mixed with chicken poo and I just use my nose to tell if things are going well. When I'm turning it, if it smells more like poo(or urine) than compost - it gets some more leaves or grass or kitchen scraps. If it smells more like rotting veggies (garbage) than compost - it gets more coop cleanings.
Not at all scientific and totally subjective, but it's working for me.

Mine will not be smelling this winter. It will just have to decompose. We do have some compost bins full, but will take forever before it finishes.
