It is understanding that they do, but around here you are lucky to see or even hear them as they are just passing through on their way west to the mountains. There isn't enough proper habitat to make them want to stay for more than a few seconds.

Caroldee, my blooms looked different. Yours look alot like sweet peas and they look orange. Mine had a more simple reddish flower :/

They do appear more red when the sun is not shinning through them. I also thought the bloom resembled a sweet pea. The foliage was very much like a green bean.

I grew scarlet runner beans up a dead peach tree. It was pretty hot and dry this summer. Even though I watered, they didn't grow much until fall cooled things down. The hummers visited frequently, but then the mocking bird found out how well it liked to eat the blooms right up! I couldn't figure it out until I watched one morning as that feathered rat gobbled up every open bloom. My bush beans didn't do so well either, and I'll blame the same factors - heat, drought, birds

I planted the scarlet runner this year but didnt like them as a green bean but plan on trying the beautiful bean in soup this winter I let them dry and got a good amount...I did not know that the hummers liked them so that is a good reason to grow them I am always trying to lure humming birds into my yard...I will save some of the seeds for next year...My favorite green bean is kentucky wonder

I wonder if the seeds are still good that my mother-in-law gave me a few years ago. I didn't plant them because I didn't know what they were. I may have to try planting them to see what happens. Do they need a trellis?
