What a wonderful gift! Many of you know that my 90 year old Mom lives with us and that she fell, had surgery on 2 vertebrae and that I can barely leave the house, even to go outside for a few minutes. A lady from church came this morning and stayed in the house with Mom, while I worked outside. How fabulous! :coolsun

My activity of choice?????? CLEAN OUT THE CHICKEN RUN!!!!!!!!!!!! :celebrate :weee :tools :clap :ya :thumbsup Yeah, I know, I could've left and went anywhere, but I happily scooped poop, sweated and got dirty.

I practice deep litter because it works for me. I toss in leaves, corn shucks, pea hulls, grass clippings, pull-up-the-garden-plants-because-they're-done, corn cobs, anything and everything organic. What they don't eat, they poop on and scratch it to bits. There is very little smell and few flies. They are constantly scratching and turning the soil in their run, my little composters at work. :love I dig it out 2-3 times a year, spread it in the garden or pile it in wire bins until needed. I got 8 dump wagon loads out of the run of black, crumbly, garden gold this morning. I spread it in a 7'x16' enclosure in the back yard and watered it in real good. It is about 5 inches deep. I have 9 broccoli plants to put in it and maybe I'll plant some mustard seed, but the main thing was to clean out the run and get the compost spread. I am very dirt-compost-poop happy.

I had 3 big bags of leaves I scrounged down the street and I dumped them in the run and let the girls out of the coop. They soon were scratching in the leaves, starting over on the next batch of compost. Next I will scoop out the coop, but I need leaves or something to put back in there after I scoop the poop! :gig

I finally cut the bad end off the water hose that squirts all over me every time I turn on the water. I get showered on! I had a hose repair kit and I put a new hose end on--no more squirting all over me! :weee

I am so happy to have had time outside to get the chicken run cleaned out. Sunday afternoon, my DH stayed in with Mom while I pulled weeds from the backyard garden. Last spring I planted Tromboncino squash on the cow panel fence I built around it. It was the first time to be planted and I didn't do much to the soil. So getting it composted will really make a difference for the spring garden. Hooray!!

Soon, I will be cruising the streets, looking for bags of leaves that people are only too glad to get rid of. My girls will know what to do with them. ;)

What about getting walkie talkies? Give one to your mother and take one outside with you. If your mom needs anything she can call you. I guess the more modern way would be cell phones lol.

If she's anything like my folks, she would simply refuse to use them on the grounds that she's 'not interested in any of that new fangled modern junk'.
My Dad has a running, constant complaint about anything and everything that doens't fit into his idelic 'Mayberry' life. Nothing old works, nothing new is worth the money or trustworthy. The other day he spent an entire afternoon driving from one town to the other running down which store had something he was looking for. I asked him why he didn't just call and ask. He said (dripping with scarsam) "I didn't happen to have their numbers memorized". I started to remind him of the invention of '411' but just let it go. Mostly, I just nod a lot.
My hat is off to you Bay. You have a wonderful gift in having your Mom so close at this stage in your lives. And you have a gift in your ability to handle all that you've got going on and keeping your sense of humor about it and finding the joy in the little things.
:hugs

Sadly, the stroke she had robbed her of many of the things she used to do. She used to be a computer whiz, putting out a weekly newsletter to all her old (let's say VERY old haha) school chums. Now she doesn't even know how to turn it on. I tried to re-teach her, but she kept clicking on all the banner ads, "because they told me to click here" :he She took the computer places it had never been before. From keyboard keys worn smooth from use, I bought her a new keyboard and she still couldn't hit the right keys and mis spelled everything. She gave up. She can't even use the telephone anymore. It is confusing for her. I have her TV set on Fox News and all she has to do is push the red on/off button on the remote. Anything more than that is just beyond her.

I was so grateful to my friend from church. She wouldn't accept any pay, so I gave her a bunch of green beans and a dozen eggs. She was happy, I was happy. This morning before DH left for work, I planted 9 broccoli plants and a pot of spearmint I bought a few days ago. Glad to get them in the ground. My friend is coming on Monday so DH and I can travel several towns over to pick up 6 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes from a breeder that didn't make the cut. All I want is the eggs and the eye candy from looking at pretty birds. I can't wait! I have 7 OLD hens that have to go, as I get maybe 1-2 eggs a day from them. Maybe this Sunday afternoon, while DH is in the house I can get that chore done. I had no problem butchering roosters from a batch of chicks I got at Christmas, but these will be hens I have had for over 3 years. Suck it up and get it done.

Baymule, I'm so happy you were able to do that cleaning and enjoyed doing it so much. Could you maybe have a chair or a cot outside in a protected area where your mom can be for a couple hours while you do garden work? Just an idea.

Glad you got to get outside and get to some chores. It's a mind clearing sort of thing and also nice to check something off the list.
People like your friend are a real blessing, and not so common. You must have felt so free out there in your coop! :)

Mom can't sit up for very long at a time. She got dressed (out of her night gown) for the first time this morning and we went outside. We have a bench with a back on it under the crepe myrtle tree in the front yard and I pillowed it up real comfy, she was able to sit there for about 10 minutes before coming back in. Then I fixed her a bowl of soup and she went back to bed.

I am sitting here looking out in the back yard at the unplanted space I composted yesterday. I might try planting cauliflower, as I have planted seeds twice in the bed in the front yard and have gotten 3 tiny seedlings. :(

My DH was impressed with how nice the run and the backyard garden spot looked. I am itching to get outside again. I still have the coop to clean out! More compost!!! :weee

Thanks for the idea baymule. I had never thought to use leaves as litter and eventual compost before. I have oak trees all over my property and have plenty of leaves laying around. My chicken coop now sports a nice foot deep coat of leaves. They're quite content.
