Thanks! And beautiful bed mattemma!

This is the first year we've done the greenhouse area, and we're loving it!! Next year I'm having hubby cover the whole trellis with plastic, so the greenhouse will be twice as big. I'll take more pics later in the season, because it starts looking really nice when the peas and beans grow all over the trellis, and with the hanging tomatoes.

Looks very good. It gives you a feeling of accomplishment, doesn't it. You should be able to install brackets (conduit holders) on the outside, bend some 1/2 inch pvc pipe, cover it in plastic, and there you have a hothouse for when it gets cold. Maybe you can extend your harvest time.

Thanks everyone! Yes, making that simple box made me want to build more. I am hoping to try my hand at a chicken coop by fall!

For now a few more boxes will be made.

I usually just hold mine together with 18" stakes so that I can replace boards easily if needed (since I use untreated oak rough cut lumber). But I had one bed that I incidentally set over an old buried concrete foundation and couldn't drive the stakes in, so I used galvanized wood screws and strap steel (like you use to support pipes) to hold the corners together.

I think you may find that your untreated fir wood beds will last longer than reported. We built ours I think 4 years ago, untreated fir as well. We used, um, I think galvanized big long bolts (sorry to be vague, this is my husband's department!) and we bolted our boards into 4" x 4" posts that we had planted in the ground a few feet. We also left some of the 4" x 4" posts stick up above, and capped them with little fence toppers - then I drilled holes horizontally through the upper part, and I run some jute twine through the holes to help the dogs remember to stay out of the garden :)

We talked about cedar or redwood as well, but the cost was prohibitive. But I've been super happy with how long and how well our raised bed has lasted, there doesn't seem to be any rotting, looseness or anything, seems as sturdy as the day we put it together. I'd say you can definitely plan on them lasting longer than a few years.

Ah, the trellis was FREE from my husbands work - its display grid, from a retail sports store. Its super burly, the way we attached the grids to each other we can hang TONS of weight off it. And grow lotsa climbers :) I'll take pics later in the season when its all grown up with beans and peas and the tomatoes are hanging down to the ground.

The trellis was one of our best recycling finds ever!!
