Sentry absolutely refused his capsules of antibiotics and a pain killer last night. I forced his jaws open, dropped capsule waaay down his throat, held mouth closed and he spit it out. So I wrapped bread around each one, wiped bacon grease on it and he swallowed all his medicine, one at a time.

Been brainstorming on BYH on the cause of his injury. Not a single mark on Buford. I gave him a Quick Look yesterday morning but a thorough check yesterday evening. No way that he could come out of a dog fight with Sentry and not have a single mark on him.
Mini Horses suggested maybe a sharp “something” maybe wire, tin or something that could give a cut like that. Bingo! I have cow panel pens and half panels for gates. The ends poke out and are sharp. Freak accident. Pretty sure this is what happened.
Better that than a dog fight. I'm so pleased you have had him treated 😊

Buford has been on a barking rampage all night long. It could be anything from a bunny rabbit to a sounder of feral hogs too close to the fence. I think he’s feeling very alone, anxious and missing Sentry. Waking me up at 2 AM isn’t any fun.
Call me. I might be awake at 2AM.

Sentry successfully ripped out all his stitches. Wound was gapped open, I’ve kept up with his antibiotics and managed to get some wound spray on it. The wound is closing up, but looks pretty ugly. There is some stitch thread I need to trim off or it will be sticking out of his skin when it does heal. He doesn’t like me messing with it so I have to convince him that I’m right and he’s wrong. I put him in a pen outside yesterday. I might as well turn him loose, it’s not like he’s going to rip out stitches, he’s already accomplished that feat.

Sentry’s wound is healing up despite everything he’s done to it. He’s back to work and enormously happy.
I've never had any luck protecting animal's wounds from themselves. None will wear one of those E-collars, and stitches have no chance of being left alone.

Had a collie once who got a deep gash in his front leg from running into a drainpipe. Vet sewed him up, and he promptly tore out all those painstakingly placed stitches. After he did the same with the surgeon's second effort, I just let him keep licking the wound until it healed. Dog saliva, contrary to past beliefs, contains healing enzymes and is therapeutic. (Perhaps so is saliva from other species, including humans, given that the natural instinct with a cut on one's finger is to put that digit in our mouth.)

Glad Sentry is on the mend.

One of my horses had a huge gash on his upper left shoulder, 23 stitches . It’s a nightmare keeping a horse clean and stalled that hates to be stuck in a stall away from his buddies. He would scream at the top of his lungs all day for his barn buddies until I would bring his buddies back. Not to mention the stall clean out 3 times a day.

Dogs are a bit easier the vet purple spray helps keeps them from licking or soft sides collar is recommended by the vet . In my experience they can be kept in a smaller space inside /cleaner and taken out for potty time .
It’s hard to potty train a horse… 😆

A shoulder wound would be tough to keep clean. No way to bandage it. Poor guy! I bet he was glad when he was finally released from the isolation ward.

Sentry was ill once again with a mysterious illness that the vets have never been able to identify. He died Monday November 11, 2024.

I have fought for him, beginning with hip dysplasia surgery when he was only 9 months old. He nearly died 2 years ago from sickness that the vets couldn’t figure out what was killing him. He pulled through and recovered. He had another episode of it a year ago and the vets suggested it could be some kind of autoimmune disease. Whatever it is, this time he didn’t make it.

He has been such a good dog, in a body that didn’t work for him. He had such heart, loved me fiercely, adored my granddaughters and loved his work. I’m grieving but grateful that he came into my life. I just feel empty.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Do understand being thankful for the love he gave.
