Fun in the US of A, today!

Looks like Texas is not the place to be hanging around outdoors!

THEY said it would rain - heavy at times - yesterday. We had more sunshine than on the partly sunny day before. Today, THEY said there was 99.999999 % chance of rainfall. Well, at 6:00 this evening it did start a semi-serious drizzle. Most of the day was more foggy with a slight misty feeling from time to time. So far none of the heavy rain and thunderstorms THEY predicted.

Sure glad THEY are able to predict the weather so much better than in the past. . . . Hah!

So far Ive got about 0.5 out of this system but we still have overnight and most of tomorrow to go. I dont expect to get a lot more out of it though to be honest. Its been drizzling all day with a few spurts of rain. A really lousy day but that was expected so I canned 18 pints of chicken broth. Weather was great in the kitchen.

About an hour north of me theyve had about 2-1/2 so far. An hour south, about 0.15 so far though they are supposed to get the most from this point forward.

2-1/2??

Yeah, we've had that . . . since, June 21st, to date! Right at 2-3/4"!

I seem to detect a tendency for the WS forecasters to error on the side of "bad" rather than "good." I could be wrong but public raised eyebrows & shrugged shoulders are probably better than rained-out picnics and steamed citizens.

My total for this event was 0.9. I havent turned on the TV to see what other areas around here had. They did show some flooding up north a bit on last nights news. For me it was just a good soaking rain.

With the terrain around here it is pretty normal for one area to get a lot more or less rain than another. It makes forecasting challenging for sure. I tend to get shielded due to higher ground to the west or southwest.

I think there is a tendency for them to err on the side of caution, but I also find a lot of difference in the personality of the local forecasters. Then they have to make it dramatic to bring in more viewers.

I dont watch one certain local weatherman because he seems unable to grasp the concept that Im interested in what is likely to happen in my more immediate area than just that somewhere in the viewing area someone might get a lot of rain. At least the other forecasters seem to understand that just because the river valley is likely to see a lot of rain doesnt mean that I will.

I have very little tolerance for the teevee weather people.

I do follow one local weather person on twitter but mostly because she is out-&-about so much and likes to share. She is self-confident about just about everything! More cheerfully dismissive than anything - an "isn't it exciting" type. The tentative ones don't inspire much of my confidence and just about none of them deserve any.

THEY all have different agendas and it is the WS forecasters who kick out the most facts & speculation (information overload, often). That gives me a chance to play forecaster ;). The teevee THEY's deprive me of that just like so much teevee programing just deprives me of the exercise of my own imagination.

"More than foot of rain falls in Central Texas; 4 people rescued from trees by helicopter"

(AP story link)

And yes, I'm that meteorologist Steve quoted ;).

Haha, i came on TEG to say just that: first flurries of the season coming down in the valley. I guess we're supposed to get a foot or more snow in the mountains, on top of what was already there!
