Shallow rooted veggies?

We just had part of our roof replaced and I now have some gutters that I can use to grow things. Besides lettuce, what has a shallow root system that would grow well in a gutter?
I am finding out that bok choy puts down a pretty deep root so that is out. Kohlrabi maybe? Bush peas or beans? One place did strawberries. Any other ideas?

boy I wish I could find some spare gutters...
there are about a dozen uses I can think of... but as far as gardening goes... I'd stick to a leaf lettuce or strawberry who's roots can grow out toward the sides too , not just down.

If it were MY gutter piece.. this time of year.. I'd plant leeks. and then when they got bigger I'd slide the whole thing out into a trough in the garden and keep filling it up (to blanch the stems) as the season wore on.

man, THAT would be an awesome leek starting system!

New at Lowes they are pretty darn cheap. I have been thinking about getting some to stack on the back fence. I will see how my lettuce does in the greenhouse first. If that does ok, I may pick up a couple of 12' sections.
