I should probably explain that my neighbor and gardening buddy didn't crawl under that bent cattle fencing for harvesting.

He was a little guy but I don't think he was of a size for that. The cukes hung under the wires, under the leaves, in the dark. What I noticed was that he had to crawl down the paths, searching under the leaves. It seemed kinda much but he was enthusiastic about most everything he did. A fighter pilot in WW2, he approached gardening with "vigor!"

For the few cuke plants I need, I just plant them at the edge of my garden fence. It is about 4'. The vines go up and ramble along the top. The cukes are so heavy it bends the fence. The cukes are usually nice and strait, unless it gets caught in the fence while growing. A few have grown around the fencing holes and I have to break them out. I have one vine now that is probably 15' long, trying to wrap around the gate.
