i got some rooty things at walmart. i think its about 10 of them. i'm in ohio and have never grown any berries before. anyone care to share pics of their berry patches? i'd love to get some ideas from you all :)
and after hearing some things from locals i am going to be building an ark of sorts over my little patch from boards and chicken wire. to keep critters from eating them.
right now i am thinkin of planting in a tire pyramid of sorts and just fencing around it. but if i decide on a patch or bed then i will make an ark type thing.
thanks! :)

My strawberries are in an 8x16 raised bed. They are solid, really too many and will be thinned this year. It works well but if I had it to do over would make it 4x 32 so to not have to put a foot into the bed to pick. The tire idea would work.

My best advice is: Plant them in a very narrow bed, not a big square or rectangle. You can see RW4A's picture how it's all filled in and will have to be thinned.

I had mine in a 4x8 raised bed and it turned into a MESS with the strawberries sending out runners, the bermuda grass getting in it, etc.

I had to dig out the entire thing and re-plant them in a 2 foot wide bed. Now they're *much* easier to deal with! I have berries out there and one or two are starting to turn red... yum!

I have mine in a 4x8 bed. They did get a bit crazy last year, but nothing overly bad. We've already eaten a few berries that were phenomenal!

I planted two little rows of strawberries last year. 3 different varieties. We'll see what has happened over the winter. It is too early to tell!

Thank you retiredwith4acres and Southern Gardener! My garden in front of the house, that you can see part of, with the bushes is what I call a country garden. Just different plants here and there looking like it just grew there wild. Overflowing and rambling. But then I have my "type A" side where I want some things in order. So that is where the fruit garden comes into play. The stone wall that you can see "in construction" phase was completed last year so that looks better. I keep poking around out there to see if the rhubarb is coming up - nothing. I have to keep reminding myself that it is still only April. :D 2 out of the 4 blueberry bushes look like something is going on and the strawberrys have some green to them. I hope it all works out there. I would love to be able to say that I get 3 fruits out of such a small piece of property.

Thanks again and best wishes ohiogoatgirl!
