GwR, just be careful with diets that cut out fats entirely. Your brain needs fat to work. Real, natural fat, not canola oil, which is highly processed, I have read.
Hey wait a sec. I get plenty of fat, no doubt about that - PLENTY. And my brain does not work nearly to the potential it used to...
Maybe I'm not getting the 'right' fats.
Sounds like a prescription for more bacon!

I know. I really wonder about all of it. I know coconut oil is suppose to be good for your brain. I guess I am just going to have to figure out the amount I can eat and lose weight. Dr. Fuhrman says you get enough oil out of nuts, but I am not sure if that is good. I tried Atkins and did not cheat and could not lose. So, cutting fat in this diet and meat, I don't know. I just remembered the 10% rule. I can eat 90% on the diet and 10% of fats, meat, flour, sugar if I want, so if I stay on this diet I think I would add back in an egg, oil, some sugar of course now and then, but get it under control.

" If youre worried about gas, fret not. The more beans you eat, the more your body will build up the good bacteria you need to digest them."

Ha :)! "Fret not."

I wonder if the other, often more easy to digest, legumes fit as non-fretting . . ? DW wants to make some split peas soup soon and I've always liked that and lentils, too! (Maybe I'd better not mention the lentils just yet. I've heard about women and "kitchen stuff.")

Tofu? I found myself ordering a dish with tofu at a Thai restaurant Saturday. Odd but I couldn't decide between the shrimp & salmon, leaning really towards the salmon and just decided that there are no salmon in Thailand. Tofu, another legume, it was!

Steve
No trouble with gas and beans. I have taken probiotics for years on and off and eat fermented food. The only time I have eaten tofu has been on his diet. In his book, he says that 1-1/2 cups of tofu gives you 2 grams of omega 3, 4 tablespoons of walnuts give you 2 grams, 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds gives you 1.7 grams of omega 3. I weighed for the week this morning and I lost 5.8 pounds.

Ha! Good for you, GwR!

That diet, except for the "skinny shakes," looks a lot like my usual diet. Well, the everyday diet of things that I expect and have to eat. Then, there are the snacks.

Cane, 6 degrees of separation between exercise and bacon. Love it!
GwR, you didn't lose weight on Atkins? Wow, I thought everybody lost weight on Atkins. I am glad you are having success on the Furhman diet. Do you just do it for a week, then go back to "normal" eating? Then go back on it in a month or so?

I generally do pretty good on a protein, fat, veggie diet, with very few carbs, But occasionally I go on this carb craving trip, and eat Fritos and Chips Ahoy till I gain a couple of pounds, then get over it, and go back to my normal way of eating. If I could maintain my energy level long enough to get more exercise, I think I could eat pretty much what I want. Ah well, it is what it is. :/

I usually get lightheaded and weak on diets like Atkins, but this diet I feel good. As long as I feel good I will stay on this, well probably maybe. Right now I am motivated because a man at church had to have bypass surgery, 5 arteries!!! He is the same age as me. I will be 60 in a couple of years.

. . . I was thinking that I might be able to report a 15# loss goal! Nope, 14.5# . . .

. . . oh, who am I kidding? I can already see the growing season winding down with the cool temperatures! It will just be a matter of days and I'll be eating continuously during all waking hours. Why do I even try?

That is a lot of weight and I bet you feel better. I lost 0.2 so now I am officially down 6 pounds this morning.

Well, what I've been doing is losing for 6 months and then putting it back on for half a year.! I only lost 7# last summer, with the down-sized gardens. I just knew that was gonna be problem over the winter and I struggled mightily against gaining my usual 15#! Maybe a 9# gain wasn't bad and the best I've done in years.

Of course, I can easily vary a few pounds over few days but I believe what I see on that scale - or, it ain't no fun ;)! The pants don't lie, either . And, altho' I'm over 6' tall and the MD has never told me I had to lose weight, I know how difficult it is for me to get around if I'm dragging 20# of extra fat! I'm no longer amused and just too olde and lame for it :/.

I will need to make a real effort during the winter to slow the rollercoaster down.
