Smart? Not so much, yet.

You'll catch on to it. I actually like texting, it's kinda like email. There are some people that if they are on the phone, you can't get off the phone. But texting is quieter, shorter and easier to "hang up" politely.

Our DD just added her husband to our plan when they married. It's an old plan, with a LOT of minutes and data. AT&T tries to "sell" us on a new plan all the time so they can get us off the plan we have had for so long, but we are not interested.

bay I agree txing is so much better for those people who just ramble on with phone.I also learned hitting a button while talking makes a beep, I then say thats the low battery warning I have to get off.

Well, my perspective is that a text is like the person passed by in a crowded room and slipped a note in your shirt pocket.

Nothing needs to be said, no interruption, others may not know that the note was even passed ..

Don't forget it! When you have a chance to step off to the side, put down what you are working on, pull over and park ... there is the note!

Hey, hey! Today I learned that I don't need to type to send text messages. I can speak the message and have it sent. WOW! Smart! My fingers seem to keep hitting the wrong keys much of the time.

"On my way home. Just dropped Gypsy off. Be there in about 20." The phone understood me on the first try and spelled every word right. Smart phone; happy text-er.

This is something @seedcorn does ... I think. Speech to Text (STT) emails.

He talked once about sending text to the "cloud." Maybe, he was just talking to the clouds.

digitS' are better off the touch screen. I use a stylus. My experience with one has been kinda silly. I gotta have the clip. So, the first one, I broke the clip almost immediately. Got another and the clip doesn't hold well. I dare not take it outside and once closed the door on it. ~ crunch ~

Third try, I got 3 styli (). They double as pens. Hey Great! One no longer works as a pen and looks like I've drug it behind the truck. Second one, I gave to DW, she never uses it. Last one, works great, looks respectable, stays tight in my shirt pocket. I guard the cheap thing like it's gold!

I'm such a cave dweller......my first exposure to speaking a text was a few years back driving in a clients vehicle to a nursery. She was speaking in an oddly distinct and articulated manner.
It took a few beats for me to realize she was talking to her phone, not me.

I still have to text the slow laborious way with my thumbs. Which is why I only want to communicate that way as briefly as possible. Even so, I refuse (!) to use texting abbreviations for words.

No, @thistlebloom , we true cave dwellers have no phone and no idea how to call or text in any manner!
I'm pretty sure I could afford a phone, but I can't justify the monthly expense, at least for the amount I would use one. And I'm too busy to learn how to use it anyway.

When I retire, however, I'm thinking I may be more inclined to travel around and may like to have one. So in 8 years or so, I'll be calling @Smart Red for some lessons. The technology will have totally changed by then, but it will be a place to start!

On my check in forums I would ask clients for home and work numbers, then ask if they have a cell. Today I ask for cell then say do you have a land line. More and more people are giving up their land lines and only using cell.
