When I start my daylily seeds I use coir. It is made from coconut husks. It increased my germination rate ten fold. However I have to be vigilant because the fungus gnats seem to like it as well.

I use ProMix to start and then move into compost with a little of the ProMix added into it before setting into the ground or a "permanent" pot.

I usually try to grow a few seedlings in peat and vermiculite or perlite but the best results I have ever had with seedlings is to plant the whole seed pack in about a foot square at the edge of the garden after the chance of frost, and then transplant seedlings when they are bigger. The years I do this they usually bear a few days before the expensive plants I bought from the store. I don't know why but they grow better, stronger, healthier and are easier than flats and grow lights. I have put a wall-of-water around them when I had one but really it's not necessary. I learned this tip from the in-laws who always grew their own seedlings.

I have done that.

Somethings like cabbage grow better with transplanting. I plan on sowing seed for very-early Coyote tomatoes in the garden, this year.

But, everything is much later. Without maturing, fruiting, etc., by the time the weather cools near the end of the growing season, maybe too late. At any rate, my early cabbage became my late cabbage.
