Very nice, Kassaundra! I'm envious of anyone who can use their soil to plant things in. It's raised beds here or nothing!

We have opted for a permanent fence around the orchard and canning garden. (800'!) The deer just keep ripping through the fence. W have bee going round and round about weed control on the fence line. I like the heavy chips you chose. The look is quite nice. Maybe cardboard and that would hold up for some time. We have had success elsewhere.
You sure have been busy! You should keep those pics for later when all spring breaks loose! It's so very perfect! I just love it.

The second part of my plan for weed control is the have my husband shallow till the ground one tiller width in front of each bed row once a month. My main weed issue is runner grass I'm hoping that will disrupt their spread enough to keep up with, or give them something better to do then invade my bed (try and regrow)April Manier said:We have opted for a permanent fence around the orchard and canning garden. Kassaundra, I do that around the perimeter of my lawn. I'm making a dry creek bed, a multi-year project so far, and tilling it keeps the weeds at bay as well as making it easier to dig and place the small boulders I'm using.
I like the look too, it's tidier than the haphazard way my grass kind of peters out into the more wild areas.
Another benefit is that any weeds that do start to grow are really easy to pluck out.

Feel free to come over here and do all the work you would like. This winter has been a cold dreary wet mess, and I never got to any of my usual winter chores. I've usually dug up the cannas by now and split them, but that didn't happen. Nor did fixing any of the beds along the house. I only ever got to mulching around the fruit trees with compost and crushed leaves. No piles of mulch at the end of the driveway waiting on me either. Wetness has only allowed a short enough period to till in 1 bed, and I haven't been able to mound or break up my walkways over there yet. Its just weeds coming back in after I threw some fertilizer and compost out.
I'm glad someone's weather has allowed them to have time to have some winter accomplishments. There is really so much to do while the plants snooze.

vfem, sorry about your bad winter weather, winter is always depressing enough for me, it would be sooooo much worse if I couldn't get the gardening stuff done too.
