Some of those Andean potatoes are very neat looking. They actually use more than one species of potato down there. I'd like to be able to grow some varieties but I think that most have issues with day-length sensitivity, and won't start to form tubers until it's too late.
Peru still has most of it's Native (South) American population. I guess that all of the old traditional uses of potatoes down there would still be alive and flourishing with the Peruvians. If you go out west to an Indian reservation you could find different varieties of beans, peppers, devil's claw, and the like being used in everything from ceremonies to eating to basket making. Your probably pretty close to one of those reservations, Bay. This kind of stuff is very interesting.
Our preacher goes to South America, teaching classes at Christian schools that train preachers. He told us of the grocery stores in Peru that have many, many different varieties of potatoes. It seems that certain varieties are used for certain events. Interesting.
