Howdy desertlady

By far most spiders are entirely harmless if ya give them normal space.

All spiders, not counting mites, are carnivores.

Carnivores are mostly great to have in your garden.

When ya see a spider in your garden, say "thank you" to it, out loud.

That spider will be gobbling up mosquitos, cabbage moths, fruit flies, brown gnats, whiteflies, and any aphids that come by.

There are really only 2 kinds of spiders to watch out for.

Learn to recognize them.

Black widows look just like the spider used on halloween decorations, real easy to spot. Gloss black, unique angles on the legs.
If anyone is sensitive at all to spider or bug bites or stings, and may be in serious trouble if bitten, then yes, stomp them. For most of us, a Black Widow bite winds up looking for all the world like someone held a magnifying glass in the sun and aimed the light on the skin too long. A silver dollar sized red spot with a small patch of dead skin in the middle, oh, and it seems like you have an adrenalin rush for a few days, too much, ya feel stressed. Add to this, a person can develop a sensitivity to bug bites and stings and not know it.

Brown Recluse are harder to identify, but they are completely a light brown. Stomp it immediately and repeatedly, ensure you see the squished body.

All other spiders are good to have around!!!

For simpleness, until you know for sure, if a spider is all brown or all black, stomp it.

Google up brown recluse spider, and google up black widow spider, and use the images thing.

I guess down there in the desert you all have some real bad scorpions. I'd learn about them on google and wikipedia.

That's terrible about your friend! I thought I saw a brown recluse in my attic over the summer - I've been reading about them nonstop now...

You know, to be so poisonous, brown recluse spiders are not agressive and do not agitate very easily. I know we have them in our house, particularly in dark dry areas. One of their favorite hiding places is behind hanging pictures, in the creases of the frame and canvas. So be careful when you take those paintings, etc down to dust or rearrange. They also like to be in kitchen cabinets. Have you ever taken down a jar or glass that hasn't been used in years? Dried-up spider in it? Maybe a live one, still. Probably a recluse.
We do kill them when we see them, but we don't spray the house for them. I guess we fear the chemicals more than the spider. :/

*Shudders* And just when I'd made peace with the spiders... :th

I've seen just way too many spiders in my old farmhouse this year. I don't like to have it sprayed at all, but they've really gotten excessive. They mostly stay in the basement, but I had a wolf spider within 10" of the baby playing on her blanket on the living room floor. Saw him just in time to smash him to bits!

Here's a spider ID chart I found recently... I haven't seen any that were probably brown recluse, but I wouldn't be surprised if I did! We're in their range.

They say the best way to prevent spiders is to keep your home very clean and dusted, especially in out of the way places like under the bed. If that's the case...I'M DOOMED!!

Maybe if you stopped planting them you wouldn't have so many? ;)

Good chart Journey, thanks for sharing it. :)
It's funny, I was sitting here reading the thread and I looked down and a tiny spider was climbing up my sweatshirt. Squish. Hope it wasn't named Charlotte!

In our old house, or should I say "former" house, which certainly was old too, we lived with a lot of black widows. We only lived with them as long as they weren't discovered. Once seen they were smashed. But it's odd how we became accustomed to running across them and it was just another hohum activity, splatting black widows.
