Spiraea cuttingscuttings

Trying to propagate this lovely Spiraea that was my Grandmother's. Where do I cut to make the cuttings? Hardwood? Semi hardwood? Softwood? I'm so confused!

I know mine readily start from laying on the ground and being covered in soil. I'll check out my propagation book later today. I know I've started them. I bought one and have about a dozen around here.

Lignified cuttings spirea can rooting, since July. But this is usually done in the fall, in September - October. Then the cuttings will go under the snow, and they will not require watering and spraying, and in the spring roots grow.
But if it is necessary now, it is better to take the 'red cuttings "with photo.

Each cutting should have 4-5 leaves.

Lower leaves on the cuttings must be removed together with petioles.

The rest of the leaves on each the cuttings must be cut in half.

Soak cuttings for 10-12 hours in a solution to defenses cuttings.

The lower part dipped in rooting powder.

Landed cuttings in moist sand or light soil. Cuttings are arranged not vertically, but at an angle of about 30-45 °.

Mist the cuttings from the sprinkler. While the warm weather to spray them once in 2-3 days.

Close the container. Put in the shade under trees.
Before the advent of new shoots. You can put in the not container, and the soil immediately. I have a special bed of cuttings for the garden. "Kindergarten" is called.
If you do cuttings in late summer, it is necessary to take a photo with yellow. The lower part should lignified + cut green tops.

Thank you, Larissa. Pretty much the same as my book. My 'kindergarten' is a sand box for the purpose of cuttings.

So I've seen the step to cut the remaining leaves by half in directions to propogate other plants too. What is the purpose?

The plant needs a lot of moisture for the appearance of roots. To reduce moisture evaporation, the leaves are cut off. The plant will not waste energy on the leaves, which will still perish, but start laying new buds and root systems.
