Here is my SFG about two weeks after plating. Everything but the catnip has sprouted (the cats are totally bummed!), and I have 12 tomatoes already!:weee

I love this method of gardening. So easy and I've never had such happy plants.

I'm sold.:tools

Hmm ... I don't get it. Aren't your plants a little too close together? Did I see you have more than 1 tomato plants in the same square? How will they not suffocate when grown up?

Maybe I need to check out that book, SFG, from the library and read first.

It looks really nice! You have such healthy strong looking plants! :thumbsup And I looooove your box.

But I have to ask the same question.......Are you following the Mel Bartholomew method of SFG?
If so, tomatoes require 1 square foot for each plant.
And maybe that's what your plants have and it's just the camera angle.

Yes, everything looks to have gotten HUGE!!!!

I have to agree with everyone... I think you have too many tomato plants in one Sq Ft block?

"Depending on the mature size of the plant, grow 1, 4, 9, or 16 equally spaced plants per square foot. If the seed packet recommends plant spacing be 12 inches apart, plant one plant per square foot. If 6 inch spacing; 4 per square foot. If 4 inch spacing; 9 per square foot. If 3 inch spacing; 16 per square foot."

I hope that helps.

I bet you could easily transplant a few of the tomatoes into some pots or another beds?!

Hmmm. :/

I consulted a local SFG guru prior to planting, and he and I planned out my garden. He said the spacing would work well. I'll keep an eye on things-if it gets too cramped I can move the plants into other containers (we have been toying with the idea of setting up a few more of these, so maybe I'll put them in there). So far, everything seems happy.

chills-I think it is probably a combination of all of those things, plus it is at waist level so it is so easy to keep everything weeded, fertilized etc. It really makes you want to spoil the plants!:throw

Are they bush tomatoes? If not, they may get taller than you can reach! ;) Its nothing for my tomatoes to get 5-6 ft. tall in season, so if you are already at waist high, how will you support them or reach them to arrange support when they are fully grown? Just musing....... :)

Everything looks great, BTW! :D

I think everything looks great!!! I am a long time Mel follower ...really long time follower! my SFG's (I have a lot of them I think 16 now!) are all crammed with plants ..I try to eat from one box at a time and rotate my stuff around to keep things healthy ....cramming the plants together is the point, saves on water, large harvest small area and no weeding ..If you absolutely have to you can cut a plant down later because of crowding but I have not had to do that

with vining tomoatos it is good to trellis or have them vine around a stake... bushy tomatos just need a little pinching to let light and air in

I always drip irrigate and cover them when it rains

anyway your sfg is magnificant! much neater and nicer than mine!

you motivate me to organize!
