Salish Sea, I like that. Now we are getting back to the contrast between Bellingham, WA and Albuquerque, NM, DesertGirl.

A vote of confidence from the other side of the gardening coin.

digitS-The other side of the coin, indeed!

Agreed. When I first read your post HiDelight, I was thinking, "Why on earth would you COVER plants when it rains (remembering that it rarely rains for longer than 10 minutes here in the high desert!). We all have our gardening crosses to bear, eh?;)
Thanks for the feedback, by the way. I went back to the guru, and he said pretty much what you said-the whole point is to utilize the space, save in water, discourage weeds etc. My tomatoes are bushies, so I should be ok as long as I make sure they are getting enough light.

Good to meet an accomplished SFG! If you have any words of wisdom, I'm all ears (or yes, I guess:rolleyes:).

There is an art to growing tomatoes in the Pacific NW and it was much easier when I lived in the Southwest that is for sure!

here is all my "general" sage wisdom
plant whatever you want show no fear..my failures taught me sooo freaking much!
however you really should only plant what you like to eat
cram all you can in each square...eat everything in order of ripeness and rotate your crops so you have something fresh to cook or make a salad out of all year long (I am almost there! I was able to eat out of the garden for 10 months this year)

when I lived in So AZ I used to have some okra in my garden and let the pods dry out they were so pretty! ..you can plant raw peanuts in your box too! they grow there!

sunflowers make nice trelis for beans as well as corn
you can never have too much planted that you can not plant some nasturtiums around the edges

anyway
your box looks perfect! can not wait to see it progress
