squash question

I've never made anything out of squash. Don't know if I've eaten it either but anyway when a recipe calls for grated squash what part of it do I grate? Do I use the outside or just the inside?

If your wondering why I planted it its for my baby. He loves squash so I thoght I should plant 10 plants

its yellow. thats all I know.

For some squash, yes, you peel it remove the seeds then grate it either using a hand grater or the grater attachment on a food processor. I use the largest grater option.

Do they look like zucchini only yellow? I'm guessing that's the squash.

Ten plants, wow, you're going to have a lot of squash.

I still think I would do it the same way. If its crooked neck it might be a little more difficult. Peel it. Quarter it lengthwise, that way you can cut off the strip with the seeds in it. If its very young squash, you can leave the seeds in it, then you don't even have to cut it. Then grate it.

I especially like cooking with yellow crookneck, and patty pans. Generally I've used the patty pans for grating into recipes, and do not peel or seed them as long as they are small to medium in size. I don't let them get larger, unless taking for seed.

The crooknecks could probably be done the same way, just don't let them get too large.

You can also use them in soups, bread and fry them as you would green tomatoes, use them in stir fries, cook them in a pot as a vegetable (My dh likes to add a can of chopped stewed tomatoes, or Mexi-tomatoes.), or slice them, olive oil and salt them and either oven roast or grill them.

As long as you are picking them small and tender (don't let them get longer than your hand) you can grate the whole thing up. Since you planted 10 plants, you definitely can pick them small - you are going to be swimming in squash! I have two plants - one just started producing and has 1 little squash started but the other has 5 squash growing on it at the moment - but that was also yesterday - new ones seem to pop out overnight!
