Starter Seedling Prices

Well, that's part of the reason that I'm trying so many different varieties this year - to see what works well and what doesn't. I only have a couple of each. I am fully expecting to have some duds. And some that do well. Next year, we'll weed out the underachievers.

I think my inlaws are going to wind up taking my extras. If they are a bust, then so be it.

Next year, I'll plan to sell the ones that I know will produce well.

Good plan because those must be about $425 each eh?

Actually, most of the plants are for the greenhouse, and the seeds are expensive, like over a dollar each. I planted Trust, Cobra, and Tropic for the greenhouse. For the plants for the garden I use seed from Home Depot, like Burpee Super Beefsteak. At some point mid season I will clone the expensive varieties and start a batch to grow in the greenhouse until about Thanksgiving. With current prices for fresh vegetables it makes a lot of sense to grow your own these days.

If I were planting tomatoes that cost $1 per seed, I'd be cloning those plants...

Walmart here wants almost $4 for a SINGLE strawberry plant. And then when no one buys them after a couple of weeks, rather than marking them down, they just throw them in the trash. And they put a lock on the dumpster so you can't go get them....I checked.

The last time I checked in, the only tomatoes they had were teeny little stunted looking things about two inches tall for 50 cents each. Last year they wanted $17 for gallon size potted tomatoes. $3.50 for single tomato/pepper/squash/herb plants.

But they had seed packets for 20 cents...so I loaded up on those.

The W/M here have strawberries in smaller pots for $2, so I got some of those...with blossoms already!

Also $3.33 for single 'mater plants...HOWEVER...they were selling ...ummm..."rejects" for $1.67 (4 packs with double plants in 1 section & none in the 4th, etc) so I scooped some up.

(Dang seeds that didn't do squat!! )
