I got two more catalogs today and I got 5 last week.
They started coming in November.
Once you are on their mailing lists you get them in droves and you get them early.
Someone on here mentioned Landreth's catalog, I checked out their site, ordered a couple packets of seeds and requested their catalog.
This was on Wednesday, I got my catalog the next day and my seeds came today.
That is amazingly fast service.

:ya I received Jung Seed & Plants catalog yesterday, anyone else receive it yet?
Here's a little something you may not know and I think you would be happy to learn, Greenthumb:

Jung Seed has become a very large company over the last decade, or so. As best as I understand it, they bought Shumway. And, before they were purchased by Jung, Shumway owned all these other outfits.

You can make purchases from all of the companies now thru one online source, eGardenersPlace.com. That can save you quite a bit in shipping. There's only one catalog that they don't seem to want to put on the list and that's "HPS" (Horticultural Products and Services). It is mostly a commercial growers catalog. But, these fine companies are all included with an order thru eGardenersPlace.com:

Jung Seed
McClure & Zimmerman
Totally Tomatoes
Roots & Rhizomes
Edmunds Roses
R.H. Shumway
Vermont Bean
Seymour Seed

You can confirm that you are dealing with the parent company by checking each of their mailing address. They are all: Randolph, Wisconsin. Have fun!

Steve
;) Thanks for letting me know Steve ! , i didnt know Jung bought Shumway. Yeah that would be good to order from eGardenersPlace to save money on shipping, if ordering from those companies/nurseries.

I took all my catalogs to work where there are no debit or credit cards short of the onions I am ordering i have to just step away from the glossy photos of the fringed beans ...and the hyacinth bean and and and ...

it is a sickness is it not?

I think I will write out my wish list then see if I can get a friend or two to split an order with me ..I do want a few novelty things what fun would summer be if the garden was completely practical????

sooooo spill what novelty item are you guys ordering? or are you totally practical ???

I am not sure yet I am still researching :)

I ordered all kinds of stuff this year but as far as novelty I guess it would be the more unusual pumpkin varieties.
I love the look of the old fashioned pumpkins and squashes.
I also am trying the luffa sponge squash.
Other broccoli, purple and orange cauliflower, white, yellow, red and purple carrots, colorful radishes and the multi colored potatoes.
Anything they will find fun to watch grow and pick and eat will encourage them to garden and eat well so I try to find things like that.

I grew a luffa one time ..and got one HUGE LUFFA but did not know how to dry or cure it or whatever you did with it ..so I just admired it for a long time :)

I think I am going to get some fringed beans I love them ..they taste good and are very pretty as a novelty but I need something really fun and unusual for the chipmunk to grow ..the scarlet runners were so exciting to watch him with ..he shelled a huge pile of them himself and the joy of each bean was just priceless

I wanted to try a half black half orange pumpkin but did not get a single one to sprout this year ..but I am working on getting a load of poop for my pumpkins melons and squash so we will see maybe this year I will have more luck!

I received my Seed Savers Exchange catalog over the winter, and the non-member items are still overwhelming! Its a huge selection of heirloom varieties... which excites me.

I figured with a good investment on seed for a couple of years, I would get my favorite heirloom varieties and have the ability to just save seed each year and eventually stop buying (other then a packet or 2 to see if I ever WANT to change something  ).

With that said, I am now drowning in catalogs! I know I still haven't gotten them all yet... I got more then this last year, but these catalogs have gotten bigger? Haven't they? They're huge... even Park Seed seems to be a few extra pages compared to last year.

Some of the seed companies have been around for a century. But, I've seen more and more and more small companies start recently. Some of these, have HUGE selections of varieties, mostly heirlooms. Many established companies have more choices.

Makes me wonder about this concern on consolidation and monopolization. I believe that for the home garden seed industry, we are the primary players determining what the market will offer.

Let's hope that there aren't too many forests cut down in trying to reach us.
