I got a good sized plant from Walmart last year and it grew well. It was sort of sweet, but had a bitter aftertaste, not unbearable, but not ideal as a sweetener. Chewing a fresh leaf off of it reminded me of the taste of black tea with some sugar in it, sweet and bitter both at the same time. I've heard that the level of the sweet chemical in the plant can vary from one plant to another, and it is best propagated from cuttings from a line of plants that is known to be sweet, rather than from seed...though how you would be able to do that without knowing someone with a good line...I don't know...
