I harvested my crop of storage onions this past weekend. I can't believe the size of these and this variety can even get up to 5 pounds!! This was my first year planting onions from transplants and I think for now on I'll be planting onions this way. They grew so quickly this season I couldn't believe it.
I know you're suppose to cure the onions for two weeks, I have mine in a box in the garage don't want them sitting in the sun.
I really want to braid the onions like I did last year, its quite fun to do then to hang it up, looks rather beautiful.

Here's some pics:

They look great, Greenthumb!

So . . . what are they?

It won't be too long and I'll be doing the same thing here. I guess they're running a little late this year :hu.

Thanks Steve! ;)

Their called Alisa Craig Exhibition Onions. Its a heirloom from England. I'm very happy with this variety so far, we'll see how well it stores and the taste.
I'm going to braid the onions over the weekend I have more onions to harvest as well. I can't complain about them. :woot

I had Ailsa Craig one year, Greenthumb.

They didn't have the consistency of yours!

That was the only problem with the ones I grew - the size was variable and some were downright small. With an heirloom, this can be a matter of strain, I suppose. One company has seed stock from 1 source . . . another company has a different supply.

Don't plan on keeping them very long, GT. Think of them somewhat like a sweet onion.

Looking good! I think the idea behind braiding ropes of onions and garlic is to pull them up and wind the stems together and then hang them to cure. I hope to give it a try as well when mine are ready.

Unfortunately there are no long storage onions that will do well here in San Diego. On the other hand the weather in Winter is warm enough to have green onions in the garden year round so I don't miss them as much. Instead of onions I grow shallots, which store better here.

I want to see them braided too! I can't braid hair even, and when I try my onions it's like 2 hours of trying and failing so I eventually chop the tops and lay them on screen and throw my hands up in the air!!!
