Strawberry from seed?

Okay, next spring I want strawberrys on my bed edges. I could not afford to buy the started plants in the nursery this year so I did not have any to try. Can you start strawberrys from seed? When would I need to start them in my house for planting in the spring? I have the grow lights installed in the guest bathtub ready for my little seed starting in the winter. I'm so addicted.

I grew alpine strawberries from seed. I started the plants early inside and transplanted them outdoors. They did great. Any strawberries that looked a little bug eaten or I accidentally let get over ripe I threw in the garden bed so maybe I will get more next year.

I did have a pot with basil it in I brought in doors. I just saw some more of those cute little strawberry plants popping through the soil. The pot with the strawberries and the bail pot were next to each other for a couple of months

Alpine strawberries are nice compact little plants. I think they would make a pretty good living mulch so I am trying to get them to spread everywhere on purpose

The Alpine berries are very tiny- cute, but tiny. If you are wanting them for ground cover, perfect. If you want to eat them, you won't get full!! If you are looking for the ground cover effect, check around your property for wild strawberries. I use them and they work out great. You can eat a few, but you will get tired before you get full... The other thing about the nursery berries, if you splurge and buy a flat, they will very quickly multiply. They send out runners almost immediately. Good luck with your bathtub garden! There is a certain period of time- I cannot have guests in my guest room... because the tomatoes are growing in there!

If you have any friends or neighbors that have a patch, I bet you could get plenty of free runners from them.
I have at least a hundred every spring that I am more than happy to let people take, rather than composting them.

I have grown Sarian strawberries from seed and had good results with them.

Im new to this forum. I am from north east Indiana and am planning to plant some strawberries this Spring. So I am wondering if any one is from near here and could advise me on which variety to plant. Probably every bearing type. I have raised beds.

Welcome Hotchai! Can't give you any advice on the berries, since mine were from a feed bag of a neighbors thinning's, but stick around and I'm sure you'll be flooded with helpful suggestions!
