Alpine strawberries don't really send out runners like the other types....at least from what I've observed. They don't spread as much, but their fruit is very small as lesa mentioned (yet sweet and flavorful!). I've heard they can reseed themselves well.

I've had good luck with alpine strawberries from seed. I started 'Alexandria' alpine strawberry seed in 2009...I just scattered the seeds on a patch of ground in late winter / early spring and waited till a few seedlings appeared (lazy gardener alert! )....then transplanted a couple into pots from there. One plant bloomed and set fruit that same fall...and I've enjoyed some nice fruit from them this past year too. The berries are tiny but super sweet and tasty when fully ripe. My brother thinks they taste like kids fruit snacks.

I planted Yellow Wonder and White Soul Alpine strawberry seed for 2010...cold treated the seed in the fridge (as the packet instructed) then planted the seed in flats outdoors in a shaded spot. The seedlings grew well, but didn't bear fruit before the cold came....so I will have to wait to try the fruit of the different varieties.

I've never tried starting regular strawberries from seed....no help there. :/

Another Alpine fan :D

Those strawberries are tiny, but there is more flavor in that itty bitty fruit than most big commercial strawberries could ever HOPE to have!
