Okra, if you'd eat it or if you know someone who *would* and just want to appreciate the big purty flowers :)

Pat
They do make a really nice flower , similar to a hibiscus. Nice perk! ;)

Hello friends,

In my southern California garden I have growing tomatoes, watermelon, cantalope, cucumbers, onion, garlic, corn, potatoes, and peppers.

And I will be planting beans and basil.

I am looking for more things to grow that are warm season crops.

Any thoughts?
:D I just noticed where you live! I used to board my horse up there in Ramona - when I lived in Santee (and worked in poway)

Really pretty riding trails up that way!

Yep, its definitely horse country here!

Okra sounds interesting to try, and summer squash.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Green beans are always a succession choice for me but you say that you have those planned.

I'd be delighted if I lived somewhere that would allow for Lima beans. Also, I'm trying sweet potatoes but having them growing in a greenhouse for 3 months before setting out seems like a cheat . . .

You already have sweet corn. Each planting won't produce for long. Wouldn't you want some for the Buttered Corn Day celebration (on the third Friday in August)! And, Labor Day, and to celebrate Back to School Day?!?

You haven't even touched Oriental veggies yet. It's a whole new world. All sorts of greens and oddities like burpless cucumber, edible gourds and even loofa sponge which can be eaten when young or allowed to grow into bath sponges. Daikon is a fun veggie to grow and used in a lot of oriental dishes or made into brine pickles. Chinese snow peas and yard long beans for stir fry.
There are also a lot of old timey crops that are seldom grown any more, such as salsify (oyster root) It has a root that tastes like oysters and can actually be made into mock oyster stew.
To me no garden is complete without multiplying onions which give green onions from last frost of the Spring to first frost of the Winter. It will winter over and reproduce both by offshoots and sets that grow on top of the stalk.

I liked the ground cherries and tomatillos I grew last year.

I did not use lovage much, but I like the plant/flower and smelling it.

Zukes of any kind.

Gourds are fun and some are edible.

I am trying black corn this year for pop corn. I usually grow tall corn plants just to create some living fences for privacy.

I like growing mints and lemon balm just to smell them.Dill too.Cilantro is you like it.I grow it just for the beneficials.

I planted asparagus last year and have some spears this year.

I have wild strawberries and whatever starberry I bought from the store.

Lemon cucumbers are cute and taste decent.
