How do you stop sunburn when working in your garden? I find hats make me sweat more when it is hot. In a prefect world I would just follow the shade. I hate the feel of any kind of lotion on my face, brings me back to high school acne nighmares. What do you do?

Absolutely nothing (my dark tan betrays my heritage, makes me look like an illegal immigrant) , the chemicals in sunblock might temporarily work but they make the problem come back worse (I've read studies done by small scientists (with no ties to the large companies that sell this stuff) that prove that sunblock increases your risk of skin cancer.) Think about it - did the ancients slather sunscreen all over their bodies? (When it comes to most of them - no, in arid areas people have found natural sunsreens. Native Americans in the Southwest rub Jojoba oil or juice on themselves.) If you have been using sunscreen for a long time or have a diet full of all kinds of harmful substances, then you probably won't be able to just walk around without sunsreen. I haven't really been much help here, sorry.

I've always hated putting lotion or anything similar on my skin, it's twice as bad if it has little grits or chunks in it. Acne nightmares is right... :tongue

Since I live in the place people move to so they can practice going to He11 when they die, I just don't go out in the hottest part of the day. I go out in the morning until 11 or 12, then go back out around 6 in the evening.

Well, I'm one of those that always wears sunscreen and a hat. Today we had a heat wave and I wore a long sleeve shirt on top of my tank top. I really feel the sun hot on me if I don't cover up.

I do force myself to wear a hat, on very sunny, hot days. I believe that humans were meant to be in the sunshine. I worry that the chemicals in sunscreen are worse than the sun... I could be wrong, but I spend the winter hibernating and I'll be darned if I spend the summer all covered up! I am sporting quite a "farmers" tan at the moment!

I wear a hat on the hottest days, but I don't like them. Right now I have one of those sunblocker canvassy hats with the elongated brim in back to shield your neck, but it seems so hot.

My favorite headgear was a lifeguard style straw hat, the breeze can work it's way through those. Not so good if you are diving under shrubs and such though. Then, a ball cap is better, but it doesn't protect your neck or ears.

Interesting about the sunscreen issue. Sometimes I do wear it, but usually not, because it runs into my eyes and blurs up my contacts.

Lesa, I have one of those farmer tans goin' on too! I look like an Oreo!

What's wrong with good honest sweat? It cleanses the pores. It washed off. It cools you. it stains white streaks on shirts.

I wear a baseball type cap, short sleeved shirts, and just get tanned some places and stay pale white in other places. If I went to the beach in trunks and took my shirt off, the alarm would go up about a great white in the area.

Early in the season I get some sunburn, I try to watch it and not get too severe a burn, but by now I have enough tan I don't worry about it.

Thislte I read somewhere the term redneck came from farmers working the fields getting thier necks burned. Your canvassy hat might have helped them.
