I actually thought about using colored zip ties, Cane. I decided against it because I thought the chicks would peck each others ankles. Do chickens have ankles?? Maybe I'll try it after all.
Bj, they do use the roost. It took them a day to get used to it. They kept falling off :/ They are a lot better at it now. Ginger will not use it yet, that I know of. If you look at the overall shot of the brooder, on the far left side are the Australorps and one red sexlink. That is Ginger. She decided that little piece of 2x4 was hers, and seems to defend it with zeal. If another chick climbs up there while Ginger is eating or drinking, she will run it off. My brother said she is probably going to be a dominant hen later. He also said that is probably why she won't hand feed. Most of the other chicks come running when DW goes in the coop. A few of the Australorps and Ginger still refuse to.
