Deb, I grew a hill of Sweet Meat squash last year. I am not sure if I can recommend them to you or not.

There were only 3 plants that I set out in one hill. Two of the plants died early for no apparent reason.

One vine produced 1 fruit. It matured nicely but maybe there was something in the soil for that hill that killed the other 2 plants and limited the 3rd.

The fruit was real nice - very tasty.

Well we grew Kabocha Squash that is very similar a couple of years ago. I don't know if it was the growing season or what, but they were very dry and pasty for what it's worth.

You will probably have better success than we did as ours were grown in the high altitude desert of eastern Colorado. Give them a try and good luck!:thumbsup

i didn't realize that it took so many days for it to mature that i am not even sure i'll be able to grow it successfully around here. i was going to start a bunch of seeds today and i didn't get around to it. i'll have to start them tomorrow and cross my fingers i get something!

Really, really early to start squash plants, Deb.

Usually, they are no more than 4 weeks old before setting out.

ETA: we didn't try to keep that squash into winter - cut it up for dinner during september.

i'm going to be doing some tunnels this year to give me a head start on growing so i thought since the sweet meat squash took something like 95 days that getting it going early would be a boost to getting some fruits early from it! i have other veggies i wanted to start but they will be done by next weekend. i'll hold off starting the squashes till the end of the month.
