Start them right now. (Seedcorn gets up, goes to car and drives very fast to grocery store. He buys 8 sweet potatoes and rushes back home.)

Now that you have some sweet potatoes, stick toothpicks in them so that the potato will sit half in water and half out of the water in a glass jar or plastic type tub. I have used a wide mouth mason jar and empty plastic butter dishes and sour cream containers. Put water in the container. Place in sunny spot or under grow lights. Pull up a chair and watch carefully. (Seedcorn makes pot of coffee and gazes at toothpicked, watered sweet potaotes)

Eventually tiny sprouts will appear. (ZZZZZZZZZ.........shhhh..........Seedcorn has head on table, asleep)

Tiny sprouts will grow into some impressive vines. (Seedcorn is proud of himself)

When it is warm and NO frost, work soil until loosened. Compost well. (Seedcorn shovels s**t and digs up dirt)

Cut vines into 8-10" pieces and plant in soil. Water well. They will immediately wilt and look dead. (Seedcorn hits the panic button :hit and cries, "I killed them!")

In a few days they will perk up, don't forget to water, and start GROWING. (Seedcorn stops crying and feels better now)

Over the course of a few weeks, the vines will grow longer, get thicker and by summer's end they will be plotting to cover and take over the house, car, barn, you, and eat the dog. (Seedcorn feels nervous, eyes sweet potato vines suspiciously)

Before first frost, pull vines. They can be composted or fed to chickens. You can even cook the leaves and eat them. Then carefully dig sweet potatoes. (Seedcorn digs trophy sweet potato. Town newspaper comes out, takes picture, writes story. It hits the internet Yahoo News and Seedcorn becomes famous)

For best results, spray dirt off with water hose and let dry and cure in sun for several days to a week. Then store in a cool dry place for the winter where thay won't freeze. Now cook some and enjoy. (Seedcorn can't talk now, has mouth full of sweet potato pie)

Pretty close....I saved one from last year! So I will get off of couch and go stick some tooth picks in it.

Along with being famous, will I be rich? Will I be able to play guitar?

I buy starts. They are relatively cheap. I have not had good luck with my own starts though it is supposed to be easy. Also I need a plant the will grow up north.

AAfter record breaking harvest, SeedCorn sits and waits for next season so he can try to outdo even his own self.

While waiting, SeedCorn plays In A Gada Da Vida, and clicks replay. Next thing we know SeedCorn is burning incense, doing the ohm mani padme ohm, and while growing his long hair and purchasing paisley for making a shawl, is given a sitar and is hired by Ravi Shankhar's band as lead sitar player. Presently SeedCorn is turned onto a classic Stratocaster previously owned by the Ventures, modifies it as a 12 string strat, and creates an album dedicated to worldwide organic back to the earth communal permaculture, leading many to leave the cities.
