I can't quite get away with planting in the fall, Heather.

Actually, I have planted Walla Walla seed in late August and had some success. Usually, the plants bolt to seed the next spring, probably because of stress from winter cold. So, I've stopped attempting to grow them that way.

So, I plant seed in late winter - in the greenhouse. I think our coldframe gardeners might have good luck using that protective growing, also. Onions can grow under very cool conditions.

I have also planted onion seed directly in the garden. I don't think there is any chance of getting quite as large sweet onion bulbs at the end of the season for me to do that, however. Also, I am really adding to the weeding chores by doing that direct-sowing rather than transplanting. Shallots have been sown like this on each of the last 4 or 5 years.
