I had a big snail problem here last year. The most effective thing I've found is a product called "Sluggo". It's just iron phosphate, so it's harmless. As I understand it the snails eat it, lose interest in eating, crawl away and die. It's not really expensive since it takes very little to work. I still have about half of the 2 1/2 pound container left, and I used way to much at first.
