So why aren't they vilified like certain companies? Why aren't they exposed and attacked?

Because people relate to furry bodies and sad eyes.
Have you noticed how many "homeless" people also have a pup or young dog with them? It makes people more sympathetic and loosen their hold on their wallet.
When the dog they use loses it's appeal they dump it and get another pup.
