My garlic chives are in bloom. Several kinds of bees (including honey bees) are really working the flowers. New spikes emerge over a prolonged period, so flowering will continue through most of September.

Okay, maybe next year, my new pot of garlic chives will have flowers like @Zeedman 's.

Good thing that I'm not the only gardener hereabouts ;). But, I think I'd better put this in the winter greenhouse.

I have those too; although they are edible (to a point) they are primarily ornamental. They are good early bee plants, taking over just after the grape hyacinths have given up. IMO the flowers are delicious added to salads, sort of a honey-garlic flavor.

I have the regular chives that have the purple flowers. I saved some seeds but I don't know why. They reseed a little here and there and I just let them be cause they looks so pretty scattered around.

I have a garlic chive plant that i love and have protected for over 4 years now because i jist cannot find another one anywhere.
Anywho, it has finaly matured and flowered and i NEEED to collect it's seeds so i can plant more. Does anyone know how to go about this ? And is there any special care i need to give the seeds prior to planting ?
To collect chive seeds, gently shake the flower heads over a container. You could also clip the flower heads off the plant and drop them into a paper bag. Then fold over the top of the bag and shake it to release the chive seeds from the flower heads.

Chives and garlic chives are hardy perennials that are popular herbs for many of our customers not only for their taste but for their ease of growing and general lack of pest issues. Chives and garlic chives can be easily divided up in the spring and summer to move to other parts of the garden or to share with friends and neighbors.

And while the plants are easy to divide, they are also easy to grow and propagate by seed. To save your seeds, wait for the plants to send up a taller flower stalk. After it flowers, the head will dry out and the seeds will develop. Leave the flower head on the plant for as long as possible. You can also cut the individual stalks and bring them inside for a week or two to dry upside down in a paper bag in a warm, dry and well-ventilated area.

To save the seeds, shake the flower head against the sides of the paper bag to loosen and remove the dried seeds. If some seeds do not come out easily, you can rub the seed head together to ease the seeds out. Collect and store seeds in a cool, dry, and dark location.

Use seeds within 3 years. Chive and garlic chive seeds also make great sprouts.

  1. Sow chives seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the average last frost date in spring using a seed starting kit.
  2. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed starting formula.
  3. Keep the soil moist at 70 degrees F.
  4. Seedlings will emerge in 7-14 days.
