Thankyou HiDelight for all the good info. I need to do some serious weeding in all the gardens tomorrow so I'll sneak a peek then. I did find a couple garlic suppliers here in CO, so come Oct I hope I'll be putting some interesting varieties in the ground.
Thanks again

I was crawling around weeding today and I poked around in the dirt and I have garlic!! I'm so happy :) as soon as the tops start dying back I'll start pulling.

I just found out I'm growing Music Garlic. The last couple days I noticed that some of the stems are kinda looped, then I found this by accident tonight

Music Garlic
Allium sativum ophioscordon 'Music'

Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 3-8)
When to Sow: Late Summer/Early Fall

Hardneck form; so-called because the stem dries hard in the centre of the bulb. Cloves are larger, and easier to separate, than the softneck type. Does not store quite as well as softneck garlic. Bulbil-bearing stems are curiously looped, as if tied into loose knots by mischievous elves. Both the underground bulbs and the above ground bulbils are esteemed for their strong garlic flavour.

I thought that was a cool name, I sure hope it tastes good

Hi there :frow

I was having a look at my garlic this morning -- it's the first year I have tried growing it so I had to start it in the spring as I had no functioning raised beds last year. I bought garlic that was prepared for planting from a nursery nearby.

Because we had such a very long & cold winter they went in rather later than I would have liked (in March). They grew very fast & shot up. They are standing tall & straight at the moment; no sign of browning yet so I presume they have a long way to go yet.....??

I have already ordered more for a fall planting later this year as I suspect they would put on more girth that way. Mine look very thin at the moment. It is certainly a great experiment to me. I use a lot of garlic, especially over the winter in all those nourishing soups & casseroles! :D

Oh Hattie and you guys this is so addictive you are going to be garlic growing pros in no time!!!

I can not imagine a garden with out garlic

just remember you realy should rotate it to another bed each year ..I found this out the hard way when I only had three beds I grew it a few years in a row in the same one and ended up as I said before with some kind of rot

I have tried all types of garlic here but the best ones are the hardneck since we have so much winter rain they hold up well and do not rot

although I did have a great year of the softneck ones one year so I may now that I have so many beds plant a lot more ..our garlic fest is next month so I will be buying mine there ..they have never failed me in production and i just love trying all these types...

My favorites however are the Italian hardnecks and the Korean ones (they are great for making kimchee and have a great bite to them) but then I love the Spanish and the Russian and and and

I am not particularily organized about types I am sorry

here is what happens and my husband makes fun of me every year

I go and buy several varieties ..carefullly label the bags then when I get home I get so excited I dump them all out on the table and loose track of what is what!!!

I have had a rough year so I did not go last year and just planted what I had (as I mentioned) but this year I will be planting several beds because my friends have all walked off with their own bunches of garlic and I only have three of my own bunches hanging now curing:(
