Back when I had a tad more energy, I thought a good service business would be to offer house cleaning plus cooking a dinner. What hard working couple wouldn't love coming home to a clean house and a home cooked meal ready to sit down to? Fortunately, I got tired just thinking about it, so........
Someone once said something like, "I have learned that it is better to do nothing I can pay someone else to do for me." A better life?
I suspect so. The independence thing can be taken much too far. It can even crank things down to full stop. And, the wild thoughts of some of the devotees! As if, we pave our own streets, build our own vehicles, distill our own fuel ...
We are now able, most of the time, to send our cars to our excellent mechanic who is conveniently located just a few miles away. DH used to do it all, and I was his faithful gofer. From my perspective alone, Charles is worth his weight in gold, and my husband, who never enjoyed wrenching on cars is happy to let somebody else get the skinned knuckles.
It is all about choice, IMHO. DH learned to fix cars at his father's side. He hates working on vehicles, although, he has done his fair share over the years. Being able to choose whether to have the work done professionally or do it yourself is often related to being comfortable about paying someone else you trust to do the work.
Not having a choice -- I can't change brakes so I have to pay someone to do it -- is not the freedom from work that I enjoy.
For a while my daughter (thoughtful husband) had a cleaning service come to her house. I remember her yelling at the Grands to clean up for the service. I much prefer to do the whole cleaning myself then clean up for the cleaners. Hum-m-m. it might be nice to have spring cleaning done by professionals, though.
With the trouble I have lifting heavy furniture and moving things, I've started paying Gypsy to help with a once-a-month deep cleaning in some rooms. I get the dust and the middles the rest of the month.
I didn't know how to replace a "new" headlight or a thermostat this summer. That's pathetic. But, when decades pass between these jobs and machines and parts change, what are the choices?
That simple floor plan. We had extensive work done in a bathroom and a new ceiling and window put in one bedroom. It was impossible getting out the backdoor most days. And, it went on and on! Was it 3 weeks? 6 weeks? 3 months? I've forgotten ... I left for 3 days in the middle of it! Or, was it 5?
Now with a different arrangement of the rooms, kitchen, baths, utility could all be pulled out from one place. The other rooms could still be in use. Planning for remodeling, or re-remodeling, never takes place.
