The Last from the Pit

Third haul out of the backyard pit of last year's carrots & celeriac.

Seem to be a fairly good shape under about a foot of pine needles and 8" of soil:

They will not last until more are coming out of the 2012 garden but could go until summer, especially the celery root.

Busy . . . both me and the forums! Last night, I may have put away the big tiller for the year, tho'!

This busyness cycled out my post so that I missed the questions from So Lucky. Sorry!

They are from SugarSnax carrot seed, So Lucky. The last of those from '11. The seed goes in my most rock-free soil and that may be a problem this year since I don't really have any place rock-free. Rocks make for crooked carrots and I've learned that root nematodes hang out more in rocky soil. Then, combine that with the difficulty in keeping soil like that moist - all kinds of carrot troubles! Maybe I should get the seed for round carrots .

"SugarSnax"--I think that was the name of a cereal we used to eat! Interesting about the nematodes hanging out in rocky soil. I have clay. With rocks. And roots. And mole runs. :/

I get so excited when I see how long your supply lasts. Our carrots were completely gone back in February and I'm so bummed. We're still a month or so away from having this years even beginning to be ready. I also didn't plant nearly enough this winter/spring because I got sick and only did 1 planting rather then 2 or 3. UGH

Those look to be some great carrots there! If only I knew sooner, I made a carrot cake today I could of made you one I'm sure that would be some great carrot cake with your carrots.

Yeah Mike, I think they would make real good carrot cake . . . or muffins! Remember V, my soil temperature just a few days ago was only 38F at 4". I bet your soil temperature has been much warmer for months now.

Storing your carrots like that is so cool! Did you put the soil over the carrots first or the pine straw?
