Wow! I only have 6 that came up and I hope that I will see blossoms on them. several were coming up and something bit them off at ground level.

I have given fertilizer to the remaining ones maybe they will work overtime!!:weight

That sounds like the work of a cut worm. Placing a toothpick or two right up against your seedling will prevent that. Of course, I always think about that AFTER the cutworm has chomped down like a lumberjack!

I'm on a borrowed generator right now. Had many mechanical problems all at once. Actually borrowed the generator to get online to get the firing order for my car. Somehow it was way off and it was not me. Bigfoot kids?

Bay, your beans are well ahead of mine! But mine are growing real well. A vole got in my garden and chopped down half of my Wren's Egg beans so I set 20 mousetraps, sadly, and replanted. The vole dragged the cut wrens egg bean plants to make a nest in the rooted grapes. Guess it got that patch because it was nearest, the rest of the garden was untouched. Sure seems like the work of a vole, that's a country mouse.

Actually, those late season star beans that i started indoors, well, some of those are actually making flowers. Those are an odd group of beans. South of the border in the copper vallies of the sierra madre, the southern part, some beans are grown in winter. Same with some corns and some peas. My guess is that this year i started them inside early enough that when put outside with the days rapidly increasing as they do in my forest clearing, that this may actually be the time of year they are supposed to bloom. Taupe Star, Brown Star one gold band, True Black Star. Blue Gold Star also looks to be making some buds. All this just as the first runners are a foot up! I think I'm figuring this bunch out! These southern sierra madre beans may just be daylength change bloomers! I didn't think such would be for any beans, but this group of them are different. They've been grown at what, 20 degrees latitude, corona beer latitude for centuries, during winter, or planted at some different part of the year.

I hope my beans will mature a seed crop before the October frosts begin setting in. I have not planted a thing yet. I have been trying to work over a new piece of ground that has been growing in grass for years. Just full of grass roots. Also the weather here is not exactlly cooperating. Just when it gets dry enough for me to work my ground it rains. Then we don't get any sun for several days. I have decided the pole beans must get planted tomorrow on June 3, 2013. Absolutely imperative they get planted. I don't know how old some of my pole bean samples are so I must renew the seed this year so I know what I have in the seeds age. Next on Tuesday June 4, 2013 the bush varieites need to get planted. I did get my raised bed behind my house planted yesterday June 1, 2013. Pole beans for snap beans. Tomatoes that I raised under grow lights since early April. Hope it doesn't rain today or for the next couple of days, and hope the sun shines plenty.

At least some good news. I planted 7 of the 13 Jimenez pole beans you sent me and four came up. I held back 6 just in case I had to take drastic measures but it looks like I can go ahead and plant them.

I understand the problems with wet soil. Ive had the same issues. I still havent got my blue lake pole beans in. Based on weather forecast, that will probably be Tuesday. Good luck with your weather.

Wish I coud be there to help you Russ! At least get a couple small rows going to get a couple seeds of each of the imperative varieties in. If all else fails, one plant of each variety will get you at least 20 new seeds of each new variety.

I have tiny little BEANS!!!! WHOO-HOO!! :weee The Kilham Goose is vining up the trellis I hastily constructed with 2 short poles and hay twine (supposed to be bush beans). The Smith River Super Speckled are getting bushy and both varieties are starting to get tiny baby bean pods. I am so excited! YAY!! BEANS! This is so much fun. Russ, will you do this again next year?? Please?

Looks like I have 9 of 14 Tobacco Patch up and growing. I also found 10 of 15 Winterfare peeking and should be up in a day or two. I found that the Tobacco Patch has a maturity time of 90-100 days, but I can't find anything on the Winterfare...
