Is a GREAT way to start pole beans. I washed a pair of shorts that I left a partial packet of Kentucky Wonders in. Sure enough they swelled and started to germinate. So I showed them to my 4y.o. daughter who LIVES to garden with me how seeds sprout and thats where plantd come from. All the other times its been seeds in the ground and up come the plants. Was going to do the whole damp paper towel thing maybe next year but we got a jump on it.
So of course I went to toss the started seeds because we already have 5 teepees of Kentucky Wonders and not needing anymore (Those of you who are fathers with daughters know where this is going ) and she started to get all upset because the plants are going to die if we don't plant them! If it started to grow already can't we save them? So guess who had to set up a special little teepee for the latest batch of beans? Yep yours truly. The line that got me was "Well that way we'll have even more beans to give to the people who don't have any" was what really convinced me that we had to plant them
We make it a point to have her donate part of her chore money to church and toys/clothes to GoodWill and last year she went with us when we donated to the local food bank any extras we had from the garden. This year we explained that we were planting extra plants so we'd have food specifically to donate to those who don't have any. So she helped from seed selection, the planting, and again this year will helping harvest for donation the food that we grew. She is very motivated to help those who are less fortunate than us. We don't have much in the way of extra money to donate to help folks but we try use the talents and knowledge and passion we've been blessed with to try to make a difference for others.
