Although Japan is a small country the islands are mostly long and thin and spread North to South so they cover a lot of latitude. The weather on Hokaido Island, the Northmost island, resembles the northeast and at the Northern tip is a lot like Maine in weather. In fact when you drive through it you will see houses and barns that look more like the upper Midwest than Japan.
Kyushu, the Southernmost island, is more like Southern California in weather.
