A few days ago I was in the bedroom and heard what I thought was one of the cats trapped in the closet. It sounded sort of like the noise they make when reaching under the door and rattling it against the frame.
I checked.. no cat. And, no more noise. Weird, but, oh-well.
This morning I was reading and heard it again in the kitchen. At first I couldn't figure out WHAT I was hearing. It sounded like the old kitchen table was somehow being rattled so that the uneven leg was tapping against the floor. But that didn't make any sense. So I sat there confused... give me a break, it WAS 4:30... Anyway, one of the cats walked over and stood looking at the floor - which still didn't clue me in since she chases the dots on the sofa cover for hours and will sit and watch the reflection in the TV screen as if it was a window into another room. But when she did that rear up and pounce thing it finally clicked. Something was CHEWING under the floor!!!!! And it was LOUD (in a silent house at 4:30 in the morning)!

It's a manufactured house so the bottom of the house is completely sealed up in plastic... there is no direct access to pipes, floor joists, etc. I did a little checking online and several people describing a similar (loud) noise finally trapped a mouse or two and the noise stopped.
Trying to decide if I should call an exterminator or just toss some bate cubes under the house and wait it out....

I once bombed my house with raid bombs. I put 1 in every room plus 1 in attic I also threw 1 in crawl space. When I was having trouble with well earlier this month well man went into crawlspace. He told my friend who let him in house there where dead creatures down there. I never asked for more details.

I have done things like that over the years. One time at 5 am I woke up my hubby and made him listen to the npose I had been hearing for a month. It took him about 1 minute to figure out it was the birds waning in the gutter just above my bedroom window. One good thing..it got hI'm to clean the gutter out. They were rooting around in them looking for good things to eat.

It gives you a weird feeling to know there is a creature gnawing at your house, even if it is just a mouse. They can make an awful lot of noise in a quiet house, can't they?
I think my first response would be to throw some bait cubes or packs in there. But you may choose to use traps since you have cats. Or just make an opening in the floor and toss a cat in there. Let 'em earn their keep.

Terminix is coming today to seal EVERY hole into the house. Every place where plumbing comes in, where the AC comes in, drain pipes, anywhere and everywhere that mice and rats can get in is going to get sealed up. I'm tired of fighting the little ba$ta#ds! I hate them. Since I will not crawl around under the house to do it, we will happily pay someone else to do it.

Wish I could toss a cat in - but there is no way to get 'into' the floor.
I can't find any hole where anything larger than a mouse COULD have gotten under the house - so I think it's safe to toss some bait down there. ???

I meant that there isn't a hole that shouldn't be. Like one of the vents torn up or missing, or a tunnel or something like that. There are 2 metal 'doors' to access the crawl space. I don't go in there unless there is NO OTHER Choice. But when I have gone under there, I can't see any of the pipes or ducts or anything. It's just a huge sheet of thick plastic that is covering insulation... I've never dug to see, but I assume that above that is the pipes and stuff.

ad on craigslist ....
I might be scared to death of spiders and I won't ACTUALY GO UNDER THERE  - but I can open the doors and fling a few handfuls of bait cubes under there. ;)

I'm just not sure that whatever it is will come down and get them. Maybe I should dip them in peanutbutter or something?
