Shipping is so expensive for seed potatoes. Well, this year, I think I just might go ahead and pay it.

If you could convince your garden center to bring in what YOU want to grow in the potato patch, which varieties would you want to see in those bins??

CityFarmer has already tempted me with the memory of Purple Viking. Another one somewhat similar to Purple Viking but a different color, is Caribe.

Mmm mm, New potatoes!

Just about the only kind the garden centers around here sell are Kennebec, Cobbler, Pontiac and, lately, Yukon Gold. I wouldn't even know what to wish for!

Here's Fedco . .

. In Maine, with a real nice selection: (Link)

And, here is the Potato Lady in the same great state of Maine, like a continent away from me! Red Gold Potatoes (Link)!

Peaceful Valley has a good selection (Link).

By comparison, those prices are okay. Why so much difference in the price of an insulated box? PV's is cheap. Didn't check about shipping.

I don't know what the cost at the garden center will be this year, probably around $0.50 to $0.60 per pound and I can dig through the bin and select which ones I want. My shipping costs are zero because I'm going to be there anyway getting other things. You might want to check the shipping costs. I'm quite happy with Kennebec and Red Pontiac. They produce.

I've tried ordering seed potatoes from the Maine Potato Lady. Costs were not cheap. I was late in the season and the potatoes shipped were horrible. That's when I learned about the physiological age of seed potatoes. If I had ordered them at the same time I could pick up some Pontiac Red at the garden center I'm sure they would have been good quality but getting one potato to sprout out of two varieties and that one not produce anything was disappointing.

I understand some people have a desire for exotic things. I grow some strange things myself, but some things are basic. To me, basic includes potatoes.

I know.

Those two I mentioned in the first post: Purple Viking and Caribe (Sange and Gold Rush Russet are two more) -- one year the garden center has them, the next year it doesn't.

They were "different" and it was like candy from a baby! The last few years it has been same old/same old down there!

I think he is. I don't imagine any of the big box "garden centers" would be able to, or have the desire to, do special orders. Maybe if it was a huge order.
