The independent nurseries here do have a reasonable selection so I can't complain. They have the usual suspects but then I don't go hog wild over potatoes.

That's an impressive list Steve.

Well, the garden center I know about brings in a lot of seed potatoes!

There has never been a time when I have ordered seed potatoes. Of course, there was about 20 years when I decided I couldn't spare the ground. It was not until I saw the interesting varieties that were showing up at the garden center that I was tempted back to growing potatoes. I still don't allow them much ground. It is almost laughable considering how much I have to work with!

It is just that I cannot make quick enough use of them. 100# is fine, 200# is too much!

None of the varieties that I have grown had a premium price. They all cost the same as any ol' I-dee-ho seed spud. Those nice but "different" varieties that I have mentioned - none were at the garden center the last few years.

Hey! No fair talking potatoes when I'm gone!
I got so excited when I saw this thread that I almost jumped in and responded before I read the posts! :weee:duc

I like Purple Viking a lot and it's a good producer so it's on my come-back list.
I wasn't real impressed with Caribe Steve, but we all have different criteria.
I didn't like the color :)p) and the eyes are deeper than I like.
Magic Molly is a beautiful potato and I liked the flavor so it's on again.
I say a big yes to Bintje, I got real big potatoes and a lot of them. Plus it's been a good keeper so far.

I like the idea of local garden centers carrying my favorites, and I think I'll petition my most visited ones to do that.
Maybe I'll have a little pull since I visit them so often.

Ridge, I think you need to take a leap and try a new potato variety! Come on!
Gardening is supposed to be an adventure!

I've tried it a couple of times Thistle. That time I ordered out of season didn't stop me. I grew some fingerlings in season. My wife would not eat them. Nope, with potatoes I'll stay boring.

:frow It wasn't anything controversial, Thistle'.

I'd also hoped to keep it going until you got back and had something right down your garden path to read. (When are you getting back? There's a small chance that the snow will melt before you have a chance to see it. Another chance that you should have packed a shovel so you will have something to clear a parking space & path to your front door. :))

Magic Molly? I realized that I had nothing at all to associate that name with anything edible. I just checked Potato Garden for the variety - all purple. I still have some resistance to the idea of purple food.

I will hopefully be home tomorrow evening. Right now we're at the Days Inn in Gresham OR. Going through the Gorge tomorrow, praying for no wind or ice.
It was a good trip for closure.

Well, I think you should try a couple pounds of Magic Molly, even if you don't eat it, it's such a pretty potato you could just carry one in your pocket and pull it out now and then to admire it. :)

Well, what snow there is won't be melting.

The forecast 24hrs ago was y'day's high at 34, overnight at 34, today's high at 34 . . . I thought that would be unusual, altho more likely this winter than others. Complete turnaround - well below freezing right now and we will be lucky if it melts off the highways this week. A little more coming, too.

Bintje may be my late potato this year as I finally get around to growing something for a little longer storage. I know, I have tried to bring myself to do something like this before. The earlies are just too wonderful!

I will express an opinion: for gardeners who have discovered Yukon Gold, it is just a matter of time before they take the next steps, a little further into the early potatoes ;).
