Steve, I start all of my seeds in coffee filters under lights in a warm place. Tomatoes usually take four or five days, lettuce, depending on variety, 24-48 hours. Good luck.

Twelve days out, @marshallsmyth .

There are 2 tomato seeds with tiny sprouts. One of the seeds turned black with mold, yesterday!

I took 3 seeds and placed them in soaked potting soil. Covered with soil, they are now back indoors. I don't know the best place for them. It was 44° in my unheated protective growing this morning. Oops! However, afternoon temperatures are supposed to be around 80° for the next several days. Maybe, I should think that it will be too warm for them in the sunny greenhouse!
