Seedcorn, the parsnips came up well last year, didn't grow all that great, and tasted like no parsnip I've had in the past. They were even rather tough!

Despite having quite a few of them, I wasn't very happy. It may well have been the variety. I'd have to look it up - something new for me in '09.

I'm not the most experience parsnip grower. I've only had them about 6 or 7 years. I do like the flavor (normally). But, they can be a bit overwhelmingly sweet.

And yet, in my garden: carrots often split - parsnips, never do.

I'm real happy to have a "boatload" of celeriac this year! Other than being remarkably small one year, they haven't failed me in the half-dozen years I've grown them. Gosh, I will be eating celery root this winter until the cows come home . . . :p.

Oh, we should talk PW into growing celeriac! Problem there is that we'd never get a delightful harvest photo ;). Gotta be the homeliest veggie on the face of the Earth :lol:.

Ah, ha! A bite . . . but, I'm too sleepy to set the hook :rolleyes:.

It is just a type of celery, PW.

The part above ground looks a lot like celery and, I suppose, can be used the same way, altho' I bet it isn't very tender. Below ground, the plant forms a bulb.

The bulb is a storehouse of starches. It is fairly sweet but mostly, starchy. Celeriac is a wonderful addition to mashed potatoes. It doesn't take away from the starchiness but lends a celery flavor :p.

Also good in stew - you would notice the difference from the potatoes but it adds another dimension, I suppose one could say.

Homely bulb with lots of twisted roots - and you don't want to trim those off. That would shorten the storage life. :)

I bet all those veggies could make a great meal. Cucumbers and tomatoes for the salad, mixed steamed veggies with some garlic and herbs thrown in:drool They made me hungry just by looking at them. It's funny that the "perfect" veggies in the store don't look as good as home grown.
