Went out late to shut up the chickens. We have nearly a full moon in a blue velvet sky. That moon is not the right color, however. Either the cheese in spoiling, or we're getting a smoky sky from the Western fires.

Darn, the photo doesn't do justice to the moon's color.

Oh, how I hope the fires and the danger of new fires ends soon.

I can vouch for you @Smart Red , the moon was a pretty red the past few nights. Weather guy said it was from the smoke from fires in Canada.

Praying for generous rain where it's needed and that firefighters are safe at home soon.

We walked down the road tonight to see the red smokey sunset. Almost missed it as the sun dropped behind the clouds. Through the cattails ...

Smoke makes for some pretty sunsets, but I will not miss that at all if it means the fires are out and everyone is safe again.

I saw a photo of that sunset on TV this morning. The meteorologist said the red over the sun was part of a rainbow. The rainbow colors themselves were muted because of the haze from the smoky sky.

Our news doesn't say much about fires in Canada. Are they as wide spread there as here?

The news tonight said we were getting smoke from the fires out west, as well as Manitoba. I think the fires to the north were a bit worse in July, but they have had a rough season also, over 6,000 fires... Canada Fires

Looks like they are getting more rain out west, hopefully in all the right places!

The moonrise Friday morning, with dynamite Venus dazzling us above ....

By mid-October, Venus will be joined by Mercury, Mars and Jupiter before the Sun rises. Or, so we are told by those who can keep track of these wanderers and wonders.

Someone should have corrected me!

It wasn't the setting of the moon Friday morning. Just that the moon was very close to the horizon and sun, which would soon rise and cause the tiny sliver of the moon to disappear ... to our eyes. The moon's shadow actually passed over Antarctica, a day or two later.

The Moon, Earth and Sun are so closely aligned that we will soon have a lunar eclipse! It will be visible from our part of the world on the night of September 27.

It will be the night of the Northern Hemisphere's Harvest Moon! LINK

BTW - You just might see the reappearance of the moon moments after sunset in your western sky, tonight. Sunsets are often lovely at this time of year. Keep glancing in that direction, this evening. Gotta catch that moon just before ... moonset.

;) Steve
Edit to add: September 27 eclipse at 10:51 pm EDT, 9:51 pm CDT, 8:51 pm MDT and 7:51 pm PDT.
