I should, perhaps, return a paste tomato to my garden. (He says, while steadily becoming overwhelmed by what are out there currently

Heinz 2653 was out there a couple of seasons. Nice, productive, healthy plants ... although, I usually avoid determinants. They did as expected -- came on with ripe fruit, all at once. And that event was during the final days before frost. Early it was claimed to be and I can't fault it but all that good fruit was difficult to deal with. Other paste varieties were generally too late.
Porter is more of a "saladette" than a paste. And, it must have that reduced number of seeds and lower juiciness. Mild, though -- so, the resulting sauce benefits from the addiction of other tomatoes. The gamut of varieties out there probably falls short.

yes, something got cooked there...
i went out to weed and then finished up the garden i was on and decided to pick some beans. ended up picking 10lbs of tomatoes first before picking beans. came in and got the beans cleaned up and cooked for a 2nd breakfast.

Mine were planted late, so I am Just starting to get my harvest. THIS one is the most interesting:
See the small purply one. They are purple on top and red on the bottom, not very big, nice and sweet!
I bought the seeds from High Mowing (https://www.highmowingseeds.com/) 2 years ago and grew from seed this year.
Plan is to save seeds from the votes that family gives me. If they don't care for a particular tomato, I won't save the seeds.
BEST to ask in October, bc right NOW, DH has been starved for any tomato that doesn't taste like cardboard.

High Mowing is a good outfit. I bought clover seed from them that sprouts almost instantaneously.
My cherry tomatoes from last summer (bought from a different place) also were a mix of black and red. They were interesting and had a good flavor, but I lost a lot due to its rather long growing season and our early frosts.

That was my experience this year, with 2yo seeds.
Of course, well saved tomato seeds have longevity.

I grew those in the '70's, @SPedigrees ! (And, I hope that it was okay to move part of your coffee post over here.)
There is absolutely nothing wrong with them so don't take this comment as suggesting that there is. Okay
?Home and garden then was at a higher elevation of right at 2,500 feet. Now, the home and gardens are about 500 feet lower. There is also a home greenhouse for me to use instead of one South Window with shelves
.My sweetcorn choice was Polar Vee. These were successful but they represented limitations and that was aggravating to me. Polar? Subarctic. It was a relief to open a broader menu of possibilities.
BTW, after moving, my job was in a commercial greenhouse. We could make use of a wide walkway outside the packing shed and I still grew Subarctic Plenty ... until I went off on some U of Idaho releases, some of which are still out there.
