Most of the seed packages say 4-6 weeks before your last frost. It is still too early for me. Better if I wait until mid- April. Good luck!

Smart Red, that is phonics. The pronunciation of a place is considered to be how the locals pronounce the name. In Illinois, "Cairo" is prounced, "K-ro", like the sweet corn syrup bc the people that live there call it so. It is a matter of respect for them.

You mean CARE-o syrup?:gig

Phonetically is the way I wrote the words -- so you could 'hear' how a place is pronounced where I live. Why don't national (or my local) news reporters 'respect' the citizens when they report an event taking place in Cairo, Illinois? I've never heard it on television or radio as KAY-roe.

Of course, I would never tell someone in New Orleans or Cairo that they were saying it wrong. That would be disrespectful. And, most likely, if I moved to either city, I'd end up sounding like a native in due time.:hugs

Yes, phonics. That brings me back to my original question. How does one learn to spell without phonics? Obviously many people do very well, I just could never understand how to pronounce a word one way and spell it another. Sar -- I sar the man run away. or Draw -- the socks are in the draw. o_O (New England-speak on PBS)

HaHa, Lesa is the only person on topic! I always consider anyone who pronounces Missouri as Missour-ee probably a native, and anyone who says Missour-uh is a furriner. However, my DH pronounces it the furriner way, and he was born and raised here.

Too early? I sure hope not! I went out and bought 4 bags of seed started. Just got back and worked outside (YES, OUTSIDE) in my sweats cleaning up some ice and taking water and food to the chickens. I've had it with watching you others play in the garden. I'm planting today as soon as I clear out some dead plant containers. Photos to follow!

I was trying to remember how my bil pronounces it (native) but I can't.
Probably Missour-ee. We say Miz-er-ee just to tease. :D

(Lesa, that was a really good effort to get us back on track! I'm just seriously derailed.)

So do you say Clem-AT-is, or CLEM-atis?

Did you know that there is a Spokane, Missouri? Yeah, somewhere between Springfield and Branson. So Lucky . . . ?

Do folks around there say Spo-kan or Spo-kane?

Must have been that folks around there packed up and moved to the NW. You'd think that naming of communities wouldn't run backwards, against the path of immigration.

Bobbi-j, all of this is simply meant to distract you for a few days until better weather, you know.

Steve
