Trying Something New This Year... (post here)

I wanted to start a thread for everyone to post what new items they are adding to the garden this year they have never grown before! Something that is a complete test run, maybe something that looks cool, but you don't even know how to cook it!

Like me, I'm going to try Bok Choy this year and I'm thinking about Fennel too!

vfem, I've got fennel on my "to try" list this year. It is a flavor I really enjoy, but I'm not sure about storing it. What are you planning?

Isn't fennel multi purpose? Like the tops can be dried and stored as an herb, or used as a fresh herb. And aren't the seeds crusted and used as a spice that tastes nothing like the rest of the plant? Then of course the fresh veggie base itself!

It just seems so versatile I don't think I could go wrong with it! What do you think?

I also like asian cooking and I think Bok Choy would be great! I've had it fried up crispy and it was nice for a fried veggie, not to heavy in taste like say, fried onions... or fried broccoli.

The great thing about being such a nooob...

almost everything is new to me!:lol:

The big thing for me this year is going to be different colors of tomatoes. My peronal quest is to get DH to admit he likes them (he is very dubious about them as of now).

Sounds like you are thinking of the bulbing fennel (Florence), Vfem. And, you are a good enough cook to figure out what to do with it . . .

I want to try peperoncini and Green Twist sweet peppers. Fushimi sweet peppers were my "big find" last year and I'm hoping to learn more about these little sweet peppers.

Also, a couple more tomatoes: Kimberley, Jaune Flamme, and Black Cherry.

Gonna plant some pumpkins this year, first time for that. And against better judgment I'm going to plant sweet corn on my windy hilltop. My neighbor got away with it last year. ;)

Also going with pole beans instead of bush beans.

I'm trying Ancho/Poblano chilis. I had good luck with the Anaheims the last couple years, but I really prefer the poblanos for stuffing.

Also trying eggplant. It's so pretty and always looks yummy in recipe pictures.....I've got to see how it tastes when homegrown.

I love trying new stuff each year!

Last year's new thing was Ground Cherries....

This coming year I want to grow Kohlrabi (tried it for the 1st time this past summer and....yum! :drool ) and some different varieties of Alpine strawberries.

As far as flowers go, I want to try Cerinthe this year.

I planted Sui Choy last year and enjoyed it. I used it in stirfry, soup, and a salad to die for!
