What a beautiful find! Good for you for giving it a place to wait out winter.

We found a skink hibernating in a dirt pile once and after a little research it turns out they are native to this area but quite rare. :)

I found a snake first time I went to my wood pile. Had fireplace changed over to gas next day!!!
Ha! That is what I was watching for, as this wasn't stacked nicely but just tossed in a jumble until we had time to split and stack it. I would have been peeved to find a snake that close to the house though -- that (and rodents) is why I'm feeding an army of cats!

We lived in GA for 4 years and saw all kinds of snakes. I get a shiver just thinking about them. We had lots of lizards also. Never saw a salamander but that one is very nice.

Very interesting looking salamander, I didnt know their native to NC, too. Good for you for leaving it back under the soil, its always best to leave them in nature. I wonder if their any similar to a newt?

Thanks for the picture ;)
